Dr. Kim Stanton is a lawyer who has practiced Aboriginal and constitutional law in British Columbia and Ontario. From 2013-2017, Dr. Stanton was the Legal Director of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), a national equality rights organization. In 2016, the federal Minister of the Status of Women appointed Dr. Stanton to her Advisory Council on the Federal Strategy Against Gender-based Violence.
Dr. Stanton publishes in the areas of equality and constitutional law, transitional justice and public inquiries. Her book Reconciling Truths: Reimagining Public Inquiries in Canada (UBC Press, 2022) was shortlisted for the Writers Trust of Canada Balsillie Prize in Public Policy. She is a Senior Fellow of Massey College at the University of Toronto where she completed her Masters and Doctorate degrees in law.
From 2012 to 2019, Dr. Stanton served as an adjudicator on the Ontario Health Professions Appeal and Review Board and Health Services Appeal and Review Board. She was a partner at Goldblatt Partners LLP in Toronto in the Aboriginal law group, focusing on the intersection of Indigenous rights litigation and constitutional law, before her appointment in 2020 as a Commissioner on the Mass Casualty Commission (the joint federal/provincial inquiry into the April 2020 Nova Scotia mass casualty). The Commission issued its comprehensive final report in March 2023 and addressed issues including gender-based violence, policing, access to firearms, mental health, public alerting and community safety.
